Crypto cards are now available in Australia, with many offering cardholders the ability to earn rewards in cryptocurrency and then use their cryptocurrency for purchases and other spending.

Crypto cards function just like debit cards and prepaid cards. Users load funds onto the card for spending on various items, experiences, or services around the country and, in some cases, overseas.
Cryptocurrency debit cards are connected to the Mastercard and Visa networks, too, to facilitate the use of EFTPOS in stores, online, and for overseas purchases.

Before you select a card, though, you need to consider some of the differences between crypto cards and the more traditional debit or credit cards.

For example, one of the main differences is that some crypto cards charge transaction fees and top-up fees, specifically when users convert crypto into Australian dollars (AUD) to make purchases on their cards. Other factors to consider are card:

Card issuance fees
Crypto reward programs
Whether the card allows spending in AUD, only in cryptocurrency, or both.

We have analysed and compared these key features of some of the top crypto cards available in the Australian market to help you decide if one is a good option for you and, if so, which card might be the best fit for your needs.

CryptoSpend Visa Card

  • Crypto Rewards: Earn 3% back in Ripple coins (XRP) per dollar spend in AUD.

  • Currency Spend: Spending on the card can be with AUD or Crypto.

  • Card Fee: No fee for its digital card, $14.99 for the physical card.

The Australian-based company CryptoSpend isn’t yet one of the most popular crypto wallets or exchanges in the market, but the firm’s crypto Visa card does pack a punch in many ways.

It boasts one of the highest cashback offers in the market, with users receiving 3% of their spending back in Ripple tokens, which is an XRP cryptocurrency. If your preferred crypto type is XRP, being able to earn Ripple tokens as your rewards offering should suit you well.

The CryptoSpend wallet currently supports 15+ of the most popular cryptocurrencies that can be used for spending, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple (XRP). You can also choose to load your card with Australian dollars for spending where AUD is required.

You can also choose to load your card with Australian dollars. Doing this will save you having to pay transaction fees if AUD is required to finalise transactions, rather than having to convert your cryptocurrency.

CryptoSpend offers a free digital card that can be used for immediate spending once the card has been activated. However, if you'd like to have a physical card, too, you can arrange one for a fee of $14.99.

How it earns crypto rewards

The CryptoSpend card allows you to spend in both AUD or cryptocurrency, which is a valuable option that most other cards don’t offer.

To get the most out of this card, top it up and then spend in AUD. Doing this means avoiding its high crypto-to-fiat conversion fees and getting the entire 3% back in rewards. (Fiat money is government-issued non-physical currency backed by the government that issues it. The Aussie dollar is an example of this.)

If you opt to make purchases from your cryptocurrency balance, you will incur a 2-to-3% transaction fee for each purchase. These charges basically cancel out the rewards you receive on your transactions, thus negating the positive you’d otherwise enjoy. Note, too, that the rewards on the CryptoSpend card are capped at $150 worth of Ripple cryptocurrency per month. The minimum redeemable amount is $5.

Like the other crypto reward programs in the market, the Ripple tokens pool that CryptoSpend provides is not unlimited. This means the pool will eventually reduce as time goes on. Time will tell how the company adjusts its rewards program around this and how enticing the rewards will be, in turn.

How the card works

It’s free to deposit funds onto the card in AUD or Crypto. This is done by using Pay ID or a BSB and Account Number transfer. It’s also free to withdraw AUD to your bank account. To purchase cryptocurrency, however, there is a 2 to 3% fee.

Cardholders can make purchases with their crypto card domestically and overseas and don’t have to worry about any pesky foreign exchange fees.

In addition, there’s no daily spending limit in place on the card. There is, however, a maximum amount per transaction of $1,000.

How to get the card

Start by opening your CryptoSpend account. You’ll need to go through a standard verification and identification process, and then you can order the card directly via the CryptoSpend app.

Wirex Visa Card

  • Crypto Rewards: 2% cashback in Wirex Tokens (WRT) that can be converted into other cryptocurrencies or AUD.

  • Currency Spend: Spending on the card available in AUD.

  • Card Fee: Both digital and physical cards available at no fee.

The Wirex Visa crypto card is a good choice for anyone who makes a lot of overseas purchases and wants to reduce their international transaction fees. The Wirex card features zero foreign transaction fees, saving you potentially 3% when compared to typical international fees of other cards.

Spending on the card can only be done in Australian dollars, though, so if you become a cardholder, you’ll have to either deposit AUD or convert your cryptocurrency into AUD. However, the upside of this is that you won’t have to pay transaction or conversion fees on top, so keep this benefit in mind.

How it earns crypto rewards

The card features its own specific Wirex tokens, which cardholders receive back in the form of 2% cashback on purchases. Happily, there’s no spending limit to worry about, rewards-wise. This means there’s no cap on how many tokens back you can earn per month.

Also, Wirex tokens can be exchanged for other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, USDT, and more, which is handy for most customers.

However, you should keep in mind that WRT has a limited supply of tokens. At some point, when all 10 billion tokens have been issued, Wirex will have to re-think how they issue their rewards.

How the card works

The Wirex crypto card must be topped up with AUD, which can be converted from cryptocurrency held in the Wirex wallet. The Wirex wallet handles over 100 cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, ADA, Dogecoin, Solana, Bitcoin Cash, Decentraland, and more.

There are no exchange fees to convert cryptocurrency into AUD. However, if you want to top up your account in fiat (AUD) or cryptocurrency using a debit or credit card, you’ll have to pay a fee of 2.99% each time.

How to get the card

After you have signed up with Wirex and gone through the identification process, head to the Wirex app’s dashboard to order your crypto card.

Ensure that your address and contact information is up to date and accurate, and then choose between free digital cards or deliverable physical cards that incur a fee for shipping.

Crypto.com Visa Card

  • Crypto Rewards: Up to 2% in crypto of choice in BTC, ETH & more depending on card choice (Midnight Blue, Ruby Steel & Royal Indigo/Jade Green).

  • Currency Spend: Spend only available with cryptocurrencies held in wallet.

  • Card Fee: No cost for digital or physical cards. However, staking of CRO with value between $0 to $5000 AUD for 180 days is required.

Crypto.com is one of the most popular crypto cards in the market. The company has made significant strides in the crypto industry by landing sponsorship partnerships with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and renaming the famous Staples Center of the LA Lakers basketball team to the Crypto.com stadium.

What makes Crypto.com's Visa card application process slightly different from other market offerings is that, to be eligible for most of their crypto cards, applicants must stake their CRO tokens for basically half a year (180 days).

Note: “staking” is a term that refers to purchasing Crypto.com’s tokens and locking them away for a set period. This concept is very similar to a fixed-term deposit offered by the traditional banks in Australia, where customers lock away funds in return for earning a higher-than-usual fixed interest rate. While interest isn’t also earned on the staked Crypto.com tokens, this setup does lead to lower fees.

Crypto.com currently has five different card tier options for customers to choose from. However, the first three tiers are the most affordable options for most Aussies, so we’ll concentrate on those.

The first of the three is the Midnight Blue card, which actually doesn’t require CRO token staking but instead has a card issuance fee of $5.99. The next two Crypto.com cards do require staking, so locking away your purchased CRO tokens for 180 days. On the up side, there are no issuance fees for either.

The second-tier Ruby card requires cardholders to purchase $500 worth of CRO tokens and stake them for 180 days, while the Royal Jade card requires the purchase of $5,000 in CRO tokens which also get staked for 180 days.

Staking your Crypto.com tokens will earn you a 4% annual percentage rate. When the 180-day staking period ends, and you have access to your tokens again, you’ll end up with just under 2% more in CRO tokens.

How it earns crypto rewards

Spending on the Crypto.com card is only available in AUD, so you don’t have to pay transaction fees on your purchases and can simply load the card with AUD to avoid typical crypto-to-fiat conversion fees.

Another option is to convert the cryptocurrency sitting in your Crypto.com wallet, or you might deposit AUD directly from your Australian bank account by BPAY and PayID (there are no fees to worry about in this case).

Being incredibly versatile, most cryptocurrencies can be held in the Crypto.com wallet and converted to AUD. These include BTC, ETH, LTC, XRP, ADA, CHZ, DAI, DOGE, ENJ, LINK, MANA, MATIC, USDC, USDT*, and others.

The entry-level Midnight Blue card from Crypto.com earns no rewards. As a result, we don’t see much point in obtaining this card because with top-ups required in AUD and fees incurred if exchanging crypto to fiat, you may as well just use the traditional debit or credit card provided by your Australian bank.

The higher-level Ruby Steel card does earn you 1% rewards, though. These rewards are capped at USD$25 equivalent per month. The Royal Indigo & Jade Green cards boast 2% rewards, but these are capped at USD$50 equivalent per month. Note that both of the latter cards require USD?$2,500 per month in spending to reach their respective maximum rewards level.

Another point to remember is that some Crypto.com cards have additional benefits that other crypto cards don’t offer. While the basic Midnight Blue card has no extra benefits, the Ruby Steel card does. Sign up for one of these cards to enjoy free Spotify deals. You’ll be reimbursed on your Spotify monthly fee (up to USD$13.00 equivalent) by way of CRO tokens for the first six months after you get your card, provided you charge the Spotify fee to your Crypto.com card.

Do you enjoy watching films and shows on Netflix? If so, you’re sure to appreciate that the Royal Indigo and Jade Green cards reimburse not only Spotify but also Netflix for the first six months after receiving the card. (Customers receive the equivalent of USD$13.99 back onto their cards in CRO tokens.)

Also, if you love travelling, enjoy the complimentary lounge access you get with the Royal Indigo and Jade Green cards. The Lounge Key Airport unlimited access provides access to more than 1,100 premium lounges, though cardholders must remember to enable international transactions for this feature.

How the card works

Top up your card with AUD using BPAY and PAYID, and you won’t have to pay any fees on the Crypto.com card. However, there are fees for topping up with a credit card (2% fee), debit card (1% fee), or Apple Pay (2% fee). Amex is not accepted. The top-up is a minimum $20 each time, and the monthly maximum load for all cards is up to $30,000.

You can make transactions with Apple Pay on both the digital and physical Crypto.com cards. Google Pay can be used, but it’s only available on the physical card option.

If you make international purchases on your Crypto.com card, you’ll pay a foreign transaction fee of 3%. ATM withdrawals incur a 2% fee if you go over the card’s daily withdrawal limit of $200 (Midnight Blue), $400 (Ruby Steal), or $800 (Royal Indigo & Jade Green).

The maximum withdrawal limit for all cards is $10,000 per month. If you want to close your account, keep in mind there are cancellation fees. You will have to pay an $70 fee for any card except for the Midnight Blue offering, which has a lower $10 closure fee. Be aware, too, that all Crypto.com cards charge cardholders an $5 fee per month after 12 months of inactivity.

How to get the card

To order one of the Crypto.com cards, sign in to the Crypto.com app and complete their “Know-your-Customer” verification (this involves providing your details and identification). Next, purchase CRO tokens and deposit them into your Crypto wallet in the app.

Finally, select your desired Crypto.com Visa card, tap the ‘Stake CRO’ button, and follow the instructions. From there, you’ll receive your digital card ASAP, or you’ll need to wait for Crypto.com to notify you when your physical card has been shipped out to you.

CoinSpot Mastercard

  •  Crypto Rewards: No rewards program.

  • Currency Spend: In cryptocurrency only.

  • Card Fee: Digital available only, at no cost.

CoinSpot's debit Mastercard is the only card on this list with no rewards program. While it’s not an option for those looking for rewards benefits, this situation could change in the future. If it does, we will update this post accordingly.

If you already have a CoinSpot account and would like to use your crypto holdings to make purchases, having a card to access your cryptocurrency in your wallet totals can be useful. Otherwise, opening a new account with CoinSpot purely to order and utilise a card may not be your best option, due to the transaction fees incurred.

The card allows cardholders to spend only cryptocurrency, so unlike many other cards on this list, you can’t spend in AUD. For every transaction made on your card, the crypto in your wallet is thus converted to AUD, with a 1% fee charged per transaction.

However, you can choose from 360+ cryptocurrencies held in your wallet to make payment, including popular coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and many altcoins that CoinSpot holds. Note, though, that you can only select one type of coin to make transactions with at a time.

There is no fee for the card, and so far, only the digital version of the card is on offer.

Not Applicable.

How the card works

Since CoinSpot only provides a digital card, you can use either Google Pay or Apple Pay to make purchases, with no cost to worry about for being issued the card.

Depositing into your CoinSpot account is free using POLi, PayID, and Direct Deposits, while BPAY transactions are charged a 0.9% fee. The highest cost is a deposit via card, with a 2.58% fee incurred.

Buying cryptocurrency comes with an instant buy or sell fee of 1% or, if you want to buy/sell peer-to-peer on a market order, there’s a 0.1% fee. However, withdrawing AUD to your bank account is free.

How to get the card

Once you’ve fully verified your CoinSpot account and have 2-factor authentication enabled, simply log into your account and request your CoinSpot digital Mastercard.

CoinJar Mastercard

  • Crypto Rewards: 0.9% cashback with BTC, ETH and more.

  • Currency Spend on Card: Spending available only in AUD.

  • Card Fee: Digital and physical cards available for no fee.

If you already have a good-sized cryptocurrency holding you’d like to dip into to make purchases, the CoinJar Mastercard could be a good option. It’s designed for spending purely using cryptocurrency holdings.

If, however, you need to buy new cryptocurrency to load up on your card for purchases, it might not be the best option. CoinJar’s fiat-to-cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency-to-fiat transaction fees basically cancel out the rewards points you accumulate via the rewards program.

Like your usual debit card, you can use this card to make purchases in-store or online. For each purchase using a CoinJar card, the cryptocurrency held in your CoinJar wallet is converted to Australian dollars. This incurs a 1% transaction fee. This fee is then essentially returned to cardholders as 1 CoinJar Reward point per $1 spent.

Cardholders can hold and spend using a range of cryptocurrencies in their wallets, such as Bitcoin, Ripple, Stellar, Solana, Dogecoin, USD Coin, and more.

How it earns crypto rewards

For each eligible transaction made on the CoinJar card, customers receive 1% cashback in AUD. This amount is redeemed as local gift cards, for the full amount, or redeemed as 0.9% cashback in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Cardholders can redeem their reward points in the CoinJar rewards store. As an example of how you can use your points, with 2,000 reward points, you can redeem a $20 gift card at Myer or JB-Hi-Fi, while for 2,200 Reward points, you can receive $10 in Bitcoin (0.9% cashback).

Compared to other crypto cards in the market, the CoinJar card has a high daily spending limit of $5,000. There’s a maximum number of 25 transactions allowed per day on the card, meaning the daily maximum in cashback that can be earned is $50 in AUD and $45 in cryptocurrency.

How the card works

There are both zero-cost and fee options for adding AUD to your wallet for purchasing crypto. To avoid fees, use PayID or BPAY to add to your wallet.

If you want to use BlueShyft (the first payment gateway in Australia that allows customers to purchase crypto over the counter), you’ll get charged a 1.5% fee. Note, too, that converting fiat (AUD) to cryptocurrency also incurs a 1% fee. An alternative is to have your funds transferred over from another cryptocurrency wallet.

Cardholders receive a digital card they can use instantly to make purchases in-store or online with Apple Pay and Google Pay. CoinJar also sends clients a free physical card, which you can use when it’s issued to you.

Purchases with the CoinJar card can be made domestically and overseas, although you must remember that foreign transactions incur an additional fee of 2.99%. Another charge of note is the $27.50 fee for transaction disputes. Also, if you want to withdraw funds from an ATM in Australia there’s a 1% fee as you’ll be transferring crypto to fiat.

How to get the card

After providing your identification and being verified by CoinJar, you can request a crypto card by opening the app and heading to the card tab you’ll find on its homepage. From there, you’ll need to confirm your personal information and mobile number, and review and accept the card’s standard product disclosure documentation, financial services guide, and terms of service.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, even though crypto cards are only relatively new in Australia, there are already multiple options to choose from. Whether you’re after a card that gives you excellent cashback or other reviews, has low fees, supports many different currencies, or is easy to set up, you should find something to suit your needs.

The top pick for you will come down to your specific requirements and the types of cryptocurrencies you want to utilise and receive back in rewards.

Always check the security protocols of any financial services firm you’re considering dealing with, and stay updated on new terms and conditions over time. Plus, there are sure to be new cards hitting the market this year and beyond, so keep an eye out for developments in this arena.
